Eagle revamps mobile website, upgrades apps

As 2013 faded out, many of you found yourselves holding new smartphones or tablets.

Some of you use them to play games, others to stream TV shows or movies, others to stay in touch with friends. And others to keep up with the news.

The ever-expanding ownership of digital devices is the reason The Eagle closed 2013 with a nearly 35 percent increase in news stories read on some type of mobile screen.

We’re working hard to provide our mobile readers with news experiences that are superior no matter what type of device they read us on. To do that, we will be frequently updating the mobile sites and apps we use to bring you news from The Eagle’s news team.

Today I want to tell you about our new iPad app and urge you to download it if you haven’t, and upgrade it if you’re using an older version of our app. The new app launched just before Christmas and is not just about a new look and feel. It also offers a new feature set, adding video and photo galleries to articles and article comments.

These features are added to our main Wichita Eagle app, as well as our Varsity Kansas app for high school sports and our Shockwaves app for Wichita State sports.

These new apps retain the best parts of the previous versions: your most in-depth coverage of local news, weather and sports, push notifications, article bookmarking and article sharing.

In addition to the app upgrades, users of our mobile website, m.kansas.com, will find a redesign of that site with swipe functionality added.

If you are reading this on our website, we invite you to download our new app (and our iPhone app) by searching for Wichita Eagle in the Apple App Store. We also invite you to try out our other mobile products:

• Android phones and tablets, search for Wichita Eagle in Google Play.

• Our new mobile website for iPhone and Android phones ( m.kansas.com).

• Windows 8 app (search for Wichita Eagle).

• Windows Phone app (search for Wichita Eagle).

• Shockwaves (Wichita State sports): search for Shockwaves in the Apple App Store or Google Play.

• Varsity Kansas (High school sports): search for Varsity Kansas in the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Throughout 2014, we’ll continue to improve the mobile news experience for you from The Wichita Eagle to bring you news and information wherever you are and however you want it. I welcome your feedback at schisenhall@wichitaeagle.com.
