Police would like to talk to a man who was in a silver car in front of Danielle Zimmerman’s pickup when she suffered a brain aneurysm and struck the speaker box in the drive-through lane of a Taco Bell on Dec. 29.

Someone stole her leather purse and an iPhone and then pulled Zimmerman’s wedding ring off her finger as she was unconscious at 3725 E. Harry, across from Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph. Zimmerman, 43, died the next day.

“The driver of the (silver) vehicle exited that vehicle and appeared to be walking toward Mrs. Zimmerman’s vehicle,” Capt. Brent Allred said.

By the time the Taco Bell manager had come outside to check on Zimmerman, the driver had returned to the silver car and was exiting the parking lot, Allred said. Children sledding in the area of Mount Vernon and I-135 found the purse, checkbook and one credit card the next day.

But the iPhone, wedding ring and multiple credit cards are still missing, Allred said.

“We hope that someone in the community will provide us with information in this case,” he said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Gordon Bassham, executive director of the Wichita Crime Commission, called the robbery of Zimmerman “a dastardly crime.”

“It’s one of those crimes where you have to shake your head and ask ‘How can someone do something like this?’ ” Bassham said. “It’s hard to believe someone like this lives in our community.”

Tips can be submitted by calling 316-267-2111, online at www.wichitacrimestoppers.com, or by text message to CRIMES – 274637 – and beginning the the message with TIP217.

Because there were several people attempting to help Zimmerman in the minutes after she lost consciousness, Bassham said, he’s hopeful someone will have information that can identify the robber.
