A 33-year-old Wichita woman was arrested this week by federal authorities after they said she tried to enter the country with methamphetamine strapped to her body, according to a news release Thursday from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The arrest occurred about 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Bridge of the Americas international crossing in El Paso, the release said. Melissa Kay Villar was arrested in connection with the incident and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents, the release said.

According to the release, a woman entered the crossing on foot and met a Customs officer at the primary inspection station. During the interview and inspection, the officer noticed an unusual bulge in the woman’s lower back area. Officers located two bundles of methamphetamine, weighing 1.15 pounds, strapped to the back of the female, the release said.
