Forbes magazine said two Kansas City, Mo.-based bank holding companies are among the nation’s best — and both do business in the Wichita area.

The magazine’s annual performance evaluation of 100 publicly traded bank-holding companies ranked Commerce Bancshares and UMB Financial at No. 10 and No. 16, respectively.

Forbes said the rankings are based on return on average equity; net interest margin; nonperforming loans as a percentage of loans; nonperforming assets as a percentage of assets; reserves as a percentage of non-performing loans; two capital ratios, leverage ratio and 12 months of revenue growth. The data is supplied by SNL Financial and the rankings are done by Forbes.

Capitol Federal Financial in Topeka was the only Kansas-based holding company to appear on the list; it ranked No. 57.

Three other banking holding companies doing business in the Wichita area also appeared on the list: BOK Financial, the parent of Bank of Oklahoma Mortgage, at No. 29; Wells Fargo, No. 73; and Bank of America, No. 95.
