Water main repairs shut off water service at the Hyatt Regency Wichita hotel for the majority of the day Monday, inconveniencing some guests who had to travel to the ground floor to use restroom facilities, General Manager Ripton Melhado said.
The hotel was notified Monday morning that the repairs were going to require workers to shut down the line, Melhado said. A regional church event was taking place in the hotel at the time, and its staff made arrangements to provide guests with bottled water, Melhado said.
“It was unanticipated for us,” Melhado said. “If we knew, we would certainly have prepared differently.”
City water crews arrived at the hotel in the early afternoon, and Melhado said he anticipated the repairs would take a few hours at the most. City public works officials were unavailable for comment Monday evening.
Water service was still out as of 8:45 p.m. Monday.
Some guests at the hotel said the water outage was an inconvenience for them.
Doug and Mary Ann Snyder had a reservation at the hotel for Monday night, but weren’t sure they wanted to check in.
“We don’t know what to do,” Mary Ann Snyder said. “If you’re up on some floor and have to go to the bathroom, it’s inconvenient. That’s my concern.”
Melhado said the hotel staff is focused on ensuring its guests are comfortable in spite of the outage.
“Our objective is to make sure they’re taken care of,” Melhado said. “We’re just waiting on the city to complete the work. We’re hopeful this will be resolved soon.”
Due to the holiday season, Melhado said the hotel was running at significantly lower capacity than usual.
The hotel is still expected to host its annual New Year’s Eve party Tuesday night.
