Seven children ranging in age from 1 to 11 were taken into protective custody Thursday after police were asked to check on their welfare.

Police said state workers went to the house in the 500 block of East Pawnee at about 4:30 p.m. to find out why a 3-year-old girl who suffered serious burns on Dec. 1 was not receiving follow-up treatment. The state workers called police, who took the children into custody after finding poor living conditions and little food in the home.

The girl with the burns was taken to the burn unit at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis.
