Farmers, ranchers and others interested in how to manage drought conditions in agriculture are invited to attend a one-day workshop Jan. 9 in Garden City.

The event is being organized through a collaboration that includes the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Finney County Extension-KSU and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, according to a news release.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the 4-H building at the Finney County fairgrounds, off U.S. 83 on the south end of the city. The workshop will include morning sessions on climate forecasts and aquifer management. Afternoon sessions will target the specific needs of ranchers and irrigated-crop producers, according to the release.

Scheduled speakers include Joel Brown, a U.S. Department of Agriculture rangeland ecologist based in New Mexico; Gary McManus, state associate climatologist with the Oklahoma Climatological Survey; Susan Stover, manager of High Plains issues at the Kansas Water Office; Bill Golden, an ag economist from Kansas State University; and other officials, farmers and ranchers.

The workshop is open to the public; the cost is an at-the-door $10 fee for a brisket or pulled pork lunch. Space is limited, and participants are asked to pre-register by Jan. 3 at http://drought.unl.edu/ranchplan. For more information, contact the National Drought Mitigation Center at ranchplan@unl.edu or 402-472-6776.
