Jets drop fifth straight, finish road trip winless

The Newman men closed out their five-game road trip with their fifth straight loss on Saturday, losing 89-70 to St. Edward’s on Saturday in Austin.

It was also the Jets’ seventh loss in the last eight games as the Hilltoppers ended the first half on an 18-0 run.

Marquis Cuyler led Newman (3-8, 0-3 Heartland Confer4ence) with 16 points, while Landers Riddle and Jeremy Espinoza chipped in with 12 points each.

Newman doesn’t return to action until Jan. 4, when it hosts Oklahoma Panhandle State.

St. Edward’s women 76, Newman 66 — A big run by St. Edward’s in the second half sent Newman to a loss in Austin. Maddie Wheeler scored a team-high 28 points for the Hilltoppers, who reeled off a 17-6 run beginning at the 15:03 mark of the second half and the score tied 39-39.

Sophomore Alexandra Ciabbatoni led Newman with 26 points and nine rebounds on 11-of-13 shooting. Shekeira Copeland added 15 points for the Jets.

The Newman women also host Oklahoma Panhandle State on Jan. 4, the first of four straight home games.
