Charles Belew reluctantly traded off his '60 Chevy Impala hardtop for a Volkswagen Squareback sedan in 1967, never expecting to see it again. Now, nearly half a century later, the car is back in his possession and is being driven by him regularly again.
The classic '60 Chevy dashboard looks excellent in brilliant red, with the perforated stainless steel trim. And yes, that is a 4-speed floor shift sticking up out of the transmission hump, just like the good old days.
Originally powered by the big 348 cubic inch engine, the Chevy now moves down the road smartly thanks to a more modern 350 smallblock V-8. Oh, yeah -- there was a 327 installed in between those two power plants.
The iconic 2-spoke Impala steering wheel now gets a boost from a power steering unit added to the car's original equipment. The odometer in the classic 5-pod instrument cluster now reads a bit over 145,000 miles.
