Share the Season: Accident, layoff put mom behind in paying bills

Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.

It has been a difficult year for this 30-year-old mother of four children.

An accident in April totaled her car only eight months short of it being paid off. The other driver was at fault and the insurance covered her car, but it still wasn’t enough to pay for a new used car.

In June, she was laid off from her job as a medical technologist. A month later, she landed part-time work at another hospital, but the smaller paycheck put her behind in paying bills.

The hospital made her position full time in September, but three weeks later she fell while playing with her children and broke her leg. The break required surgery and will keep her from returning to work until later this month.

She had not been at her current job long enough to get paid time off, although she is getting disability insurance.

She’s particularly concerned about how she’ll be able to pay bills and buy groceries through December and January.

“It would mean the world if I could go one month without worrying about how I am going to pay my bills before the next month’s bills come in,” she said. “It’s a little stressful at times, but you have to look at the bright side of things and pull through.”

So far, Share the Season has raised $173,955.
