A fire at a southeast Wichita apartment building earlier this week has been classified as an arson.
The fire was reported shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday near Harry and Bleckley, Capt. Stuart Bevis said. That’s just east of Oliver.
Fire crews found thick smoke coming from the basement of a fourplex, Bevis said, and discovered flames in the basement itself.
“They were able to control the fire with some damage affecting two units above,” he said in an e-mail response to questions.
One tenant of the fourplex was home at the time of the fire, but he was able to escape without being hurt. The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.
The Red Cross was called out to assist four people who were displaced by the fire.
The arson investigation continues, Bevis said, and anyone with information linked to the case is asked to call the fire investigation unit at 316-337-9146, or CrimeStoppers at 316-267-2111.
