Join the battle; donate blood

  • Published Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at 12 a.m.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. And as first responders to emergency situations, we see that need daily.

It’s why we encourage the Wichita and Sedgwick County communities to donate blood or platelets at the American Red Cross’ 19th-annual Battle of the Badges community blood drive Thursday through Jan. 1.

In the 19 years of this blood drive, our community has donated more than 21,500 pints of blood with the Red Cross. Because each pint of blood can help up to three people, more than 64,500 patients could have benefited. They could have been cancer patients, trauma victims, organ transplant recipients, premature babies and many others.

In addition to helping save lives during this event, our agencies have our pride at stake and want to win the battle for votes. We encourage those community members who donate blood or platelets during the Battle of the Badges to vote for one of our sponsoring agencies.

If community members need more incentive, all presenting blood and platelet donors will receive a free T-shirt, while supplies last. We’ll also have daily giveaways, such as a piece of jewelry from Mike Seltzer Jewelers, as well as a Mascot Day and much more. Make an appointment by calling 800-REDCROSS or by visiting redcrossblood.org.

While our competition is part of the fun, the real winners are patients in need.
