Opinion Line Extra (Dec. 9)

  • Published Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at 12 a.m.

I will start shopping and Menards and Cabela’s, as they honored Thanksgiving by staying closed. Walmart, Sears, Target and others that were open will not get my business. Please, let’s give them a message: Respect time with families.

Movies are just way too long nowadays. Did all of the professional film editors die or something?

I am not a big NBC fan, but “The Sound of Music Live” was very well done.

President John Bardo created the parking issue for not only sporting events but students attending classes at WSU. The handicapped parking problem is not an athletic department issue but poor planning for parking before building on a valuable parking lot.

Bardo doesn’t even have a toe in the shoes of former WSU president Donald Beggs. Bardo needs to quit spending money on buildings. Parking is an issue. Just ask anyone who goes to the basketball games. The Shocks bring that school a lot of money.

A small group of even smaller-minded people are complaining about our North American Aerospace Defense Command planning on having some Christmas Eve fun by depicting Santa’s sleigh making its rounds escorted by several of our fighter aircraft. Do you suppose they would complain so much if the fighter aircraft weren’t ours?

To the person vowing to do business elsewhere if a store clerk says “Merry Christmas”: Humbug to you. The season celebrates the birth of Jesus whether you like it or not.

Someone wants to eliminate “trash spending, such as on Planned Parenthood,” so the money could be used on food stamps? Really? Wouldn’t that just cause more mouths needing to be fed? I guess this is someone with no kids who is not paying child support. Think, people, think.

I wonder if those who echo the fear machine’s cries of “socialism” plan to cash their Social Security checks. I’m sure they’ll send them back via the post office. On paved roads. Maybe they’ll read this on a computer in the library. Smell what I’m cooking, tea partiers? We’re already there.

I have never understood why liberal Democrats don’t pay for their social service programs out of their own pockets. If you believe in something, why wouldn’t you fund it out of your own pocket, instead of stealing from others to fund your pet projects?

So Obama is now saying, “If you have ideas how to improve the new health care law, bring them to me.” Why doesn’t he say it the way he means it? “Republicans, please come and help out my incompetent people here.”

The only consolation I can think of to all this hate speech on the Opinion Line is that in the long run it has the opposite effect of what was intended.
