When Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa, he could have sought retribution from the prison guards who tormented him for years. He chose to forgive. That is the mark of a truly great man. Rest in peace.


They say this has been one of the most unproductive congressional sessions in years for passing legislation. Why is that bad?


Leave it to a dysfunctional majority in the U.S. House to think conducting investigative hearings on the existence of intelligent aliens on other planets is more important than continuing the funding for a food-stamp program for hungry children and disabled veterans living in poverty in this country.


President Obama has the power to rescue American hero Merrill Newman from North Korea. If he doesn’t do it now, he is a coward.


We can all learn a very good lesson from the political experiment we tried a few years back. When we elect unqualified candidates to office, we are governed by unqualified individuals. A community organizer trying to sell us all health insurance? Embarrassing at the very least.


I got my Social Security announcement of a 1.5 percent raise for 2014. The breakdown shows the raise and the Medicare increase. Net result: a $35 decrease in my benefit. Only the U.S. government gives a raise that decreases your benefit.


Does anyone actually believe that those on the left really care about racism beyond any perceived political advantage it gives them?


I wish you conservatives would quit complaining about the bitter cold and just accept the undeniable truth of global warming.


Well, a cold snap has hit us, and that definitely disproves the theory of long-term global warming, at least to those folks who don’t understand the terms “long term” and “global.”


I saw a few flakes out there, but it wasn’t even snowing.


When I was young, Christians worshipped God and followed the teachings of Jesus. Today it seems like Christians worship Jesus and follow the teachings of their pastor or priest.


Advocates of legalizing marijuana say it should be legal because alcohol is legal. But while the majority of the population can drink a beer and still be sober, no one can smoke a joint and not be high.


To the person who said “unless you have a family to share it with,” your house is not a home: My one-person house is indeed a home, especially when it welcomes friends more kindhearted than you.
