This couple has been struggling for two years.

He was laid off from his job in January 2012. He found a job and started work again this March, then was diagnosed with colon cancer in June.

He had surgery and is undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

In the meantime, the wife’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and her stepfather died.

The husband is no longer able to work. The couple had to start paying COBRA insurance in order for him to continue his chemotherapy, according to their Share the Season application.

The copays for his doctor’s appointments are $160 a month, and his COBRA premiums are $285.

She has Crohn’s disease, celiac sprue and osteoporosis; she has had to stop taking her prescription medications and no longer is insured because she can’t afford the payments.

“I work in retail but my hours have been cut and our total average income is $500 per month,” she wrote on her application. “We can’t survive on this. ... We just can’t pay house payment, car payment, utility bills, insurances, medical copays, medicine, car gas, and food with what I bring home per month.”

She is hoping Share the Season can help.

“May God bless those who donate to Share the Season.”

So far, Share the Season has raised $78,775.
