Police said Tuesday they are focusing on accidental drowning as the cause of death for the 36-year-old Wichita woman whose body was found Monday floating in the Little Arkansas River near downtown.

The victim has been identified as Erin M. Beery, Capt. Brent Allred said.

Police are awaiting results of an autopsy, but Allred said foul play wasn’t suspected. Alcohol and drugs also weren’t thought to be contributing factors, he said.

Investigation indicates Beery may have intentionally gone in the water and her death – for now – is being treated as an accidental drowning, Allred added.

Beery was not homeless and lived by herself in an apartment in the Old Town area, police said.

Beery’s body was discovered at about 1:45 p.m. Monday by a man who was walking with his dog along the river in the 900 block of North Back Bay, northwest of Waco and Murdock. Her body was found floating face down near the river’s east bank, police said.

Indications are that she had entered the water sometime Monday, Allred said.
