Wheelspin Young racer still on track, winning

  • Published Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at 12 a.m.

Wheels page readers may recall a feature we did on a young round-track racer back in 2009. Austin Allen was a veteran of 10 years behind the wheel at age 15 when our story ran. His career began at age 5 when he learned how to race in a “caged cart.”

Austin, who just turned 20, has continued his dirt track driving and recently won the Dodge City Raceway Park season championship in his A/Modified IMCA racer. At one point, he racked up six straight heat race wins in a row, said his dad, Chris Allen, his crew chief.

Austin, who is now an apprentice plumber, will be recognized with other IMCA regional champions at a banquet in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday night.

Who hasn’t left an auction with a bad case of buyer’s remorse? Apparently about three-dozen folks who won bids at the much-ballyhooed Lambrecht auto dealership auction in Pierce, Neb., felt that way.

So much so that they decided not to pay for what they bought. So the auction company surveyed the leftovers, sent about half of them to the crusher and held a 10-day online auction of the remaining cars. Eighteen vehicles sold, bringing in just over $41,000, according to the VanDerBrink Auctions website, ranging from a low of $375 for a rough ’47 Chevy Fleetmaster to a high of $6,500 for a ’57 Chevy 4-door wagon.

Here’s hoping there won’t have to be a third auction.
