Hold off cleaning oven

The self-cleaning feature on ovens is notorious for creating more problems than it solves. Avoid running it, especially before a big dinner party.

“I don’t recommend cleaning it around the holidays,” said James Smith, senior technician with 123 Appliance Repair in Pineville, N.C. “It can knock out a component and you might not have it for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Calls (for service) are really heavy during the holidays. If you do clean it, clean it by hand.”

Know of a Christmas tree lot?

The number of Christmas tree lots has decreased over the past several years. Does your organization still run one or do you know one that does? Email acalovich@wichitaeagle.com by Monday for a story about where to shop for real trees this year.

Make-your-stockings book

“Knit Christmas Stockings” offers instructions for creating 19 stockings and knitted ornaments. It’s the second edition of the book, updated with popular color palettes and projects for knitters of all skill levels.

The stocking styles range from rustic to romantic and from simple to intricate. There are tweed socks, argyle and cable-knit stockings, a floral Victorian design, playful patterns and even stockings for the family pets.

“Knit Christmas Stockings” (Storey Publishing, $12.95) is edited by Gwen W. Steege.
