Fort Hays State tops Newman

Dwayne Brunson had 22 points and 14 rebounds and Craig Nicholson dished out 15 assists, leading Fort Hays State toa 96-87 win over Newman on Tuesday night in Hays.

Fort Hays State (4-0), No. 25 in the NCAA Division II rankings, used a 16-2 run midway through the first half to take a 32-16, and the Tigers maintained the 16-point at halftime, 54-38.

Newman (2-2) managed to draw within 64-58 on a layup by Jack Pyle wit 11:54 remaining, but consecutive three-pointers by Jared Tadlock pushed the lead back to 12, and Newman never seriously threatened again.

Carson Konrade hit four three-pointers and scored 20 for Fort Hays State, and Nicholson, a sophomore from Wichita Northwest, added 11. The Tigers outrebounded the Jets 46-29.

Trae Beck hit five three-points and scored 19 points, leading five Newman players in double figures.
