An infant girl has been placed in protective custody after she was brought to a local hospital early Monday morning with suspicious injuries, police said.

The child was taken to a local hospital at about 3:30 a.m. with multiple injuries — including a head injury — and police were alerted, Lt. Joe Schroeder said.

The girl had “unusual injuries that did not match up with the story being told,” Schroeder said.

The Exploited and Missing Child Unit has launched an investigation. No arrests have been made in the case.

The family lives in the area of 3000 W. Maple, EMCU Lt. Jeff Weible said in an e-mail response to questions. The infant is in critical condition at a local hospital.
