Three restaurant updates

1

El Tenampa: This new Mexican restaurant opened Monday in the old Burger Barn space at 3302 W. Central. It’s owned by Guillermo Botello, who said he’s previously owned restaurants in Mexico. The restaurant specializes in tacos and gorditas filled with authentic Mexican meats, from asada to chicharron (pork skin) to lengua (beef tongue.) It also serves menudo. The restaurant has a self-serve salsa bar, and Botello is working on a drive-through. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. For more information, call 316-425-0066.

2

Green Olive: Sam Eddine has a big space attached to his Marco’s Cantina at 6600 W. Central, and he’s trying to find the right fit for it. He opened a new version of his one-time restaurant MamaDeaux Seafood House, a Cajun restaurant, in the spot back in 2011. But he closed it a couple of months ago, he said, because the food costs were too high and Wichitans weren’t embracing the concept. Now, there’s a new sign on the building that reads “Green Olive.” Eddine says that he plans to turn the space into a new fast-concept Mediterranean restaurant that will specialize in Mediterranean pizzas cooked in a brick oven, falafel, schwarma and more. The restaurant will have its own entrance but also will be accessible from Marco’s. He hopes to open in the spring.

3

Knolla’s Pizza, Maize: A new Maize location of this popular local chain will open on Monday at 4041 N. Maize Road. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 8 p.m. on Sundays. For information, call 316-722-4662.

Quick bites

Kosta the Greek will close by Thanksgiving

Kosta the Greek, the restaurant that opened at 2308 S. Meridian in February, is closing. Kosta Kiosses says the last day will be right before Thanksgiving, probably Nov. 25 or 26. The area just wasn’t busy enough, Kiosses said. He’d love to reopen someday, he said, but if he did, it would be somewhere like the east side. Kosta the Greek serves traditional Greek foods such as gyro sandwiches, Greek salad, souvlaki with homemade tzatziki sauce and spanakopita. For more information, call 316-260-3230.

Three wine events, one bourbon party

Thanksgiving and Christmas are approaching. It’s time to prepare our palates – and our livers – with a little wine and spirits tasting.

Here are a few events coming up during the next couple of weeks:

The Wines of Fall: This event, put on by the Wichita Chapter of the American Institute of Wine & Food, is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Wichita Airport. It’s $35 a person and will offer a preview of 30 popular seasonal wines paired with gourmet food. Experts also will be there sharing entertaining tips and more. Non-members can attend. Call 316-682-5502 for information or to make credit card reservations. For more information, visit www.aiwfwichita.org.

Oeno’s Sagittarius Zodiac wine dinner: This dinner features three courses, each one paired with wine, and costs $35 a person. It’s at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30. For reservations, call 316-440-5000.

Mike’s Wine Dive wine dinner: This one has four courses and four wines and is $75 per person at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Mike’s Wine Dive, 4714 E. Douglas. For reservations and to see the menu, visit mikeswinedive.com.

Bourbon and Bites at Chapada: This restaurant at 2142 N. Tyler is having a bourbon dinner, pairing five bourbons with five courses. It starts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and is $45 a person. For reservations, call 316-201-4694.
