Sedgwick County Commissioner Dave Unruh announced Monday he will run again for his District 1 seat.

A Republican, Unruh was first elected in 2002. His district includes northeast Wichita.

“So many people have urged me to run for the Commission again,” Unruh said in a news release. “As I listened to them, it became apparent that job creation and fiscal responsibility in county management must remain the commission’s top priorities. These are areas I am personally passionate about, and have the experience to help make happen. I’m honored to run again, representing the people of my district and serving the best interests of all Sedgwick County citizens.”

In an interview, Unruh said he had considered running for mayor of Wichita but decided against it.

“As I continued to think about it, I realized the county has plenty of challenges that I’m familiar with,” Unruh said.

He said “our big challenges are going to come in seeing how we are impacted by decisions at the state level. As they make decisions, they have a direct impacts on us, especially in funding of human services and public safety. If we’re not being adequately funded there, that will have a big impact on how we can prioritize on our budget.”

Walter Berry will be Unruh’s campaign chairman. Sheryl Wohlford, president and co-owner of Automation Plus, will serve as finance chair. Bert Denny, a partner at Regier, Carr and Monroe, will be treasurer.

“We already have people lining up to help with Dave’s campaign and give money again,” Wohlford said in a news release. “People want to support Dave because they know he has a thoughtful approach to decision making.”

Unruh, a graduate of Wichita East High School, is a lifelong resident of the county. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in business administration and managed his family’s automotive repair business.
