Midfielder Matt Clare scored the winning goal with just under six minutes left in the game on an assist by Alex Mosely, giving the Wichita B-52s a 9-8 win over Illinois in the indoor soccer team’s home-opener Saturday night at Hartman Arena.
Coach Larry Inlow, a former player for the Wichita Wings, was glad to get the win at home.
“This is something that I’ve been looking forward to ever since I was approached about coaching the team,” Inlow said.
Midfielder Travis Pittman scored three goals. He said the atmosphere at Hartman made him feel at home, even though it was his first time playing in Wichita.
“I felt welcome just right from the start,” he said. “I had fans that I didn’t even know.”
Haviel Cordoves, a forward from Cuba who had two goals Saturday, said the team was confident in spite of a season-opening 15-3 loss at Dallas a week earlier.
“The whole city of Wichita should know that we’re going to try hard to win every single game,” he said.
The B-52s fell behind 3-1 in the opening minutes Saturday, and trailed 6-4 at halftime and 7-6 after three quarters. Inlow said effort and desire carried the team to victory.
“We have some fantastically skilled players that when they can play the ball quick and simple … they’re really, really hard to stop,” he said.
