Authorities were able to contain a fire threatening businesses in downtown Caldwell on Thursday to the bar and grill where it originated, the town’s fire chief, Pat York, said.

York said the two-story stone building that houses Richard’s Last Chance Bar and Grill, 30 S. Main, sustained “fairly extensive” damage but that other nearby businesses were unaffected. He said the fire started around 3 p.m. in the restaurant’s kitchen and that the cause remained under investigation Thursday evening.

A damage estimate also was pending, he added.

One firefighter who was taken to a hospital for apparent heat exhaustion was released Thursday evening and was “doing good,” York said. No other injuries were reported.

Fire crews from Caldwell and five other departments responded to the fire, he said. It was extinguished shortly before 5 p.m.
