Erick Salazar died over a small amount of money.

He got into an argument with a man who forced his way into the back door of an apartment on North Broadway shortly before 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, Capt. Brent Allred said. A fight broke out, and the intruder pulled out a gun and shot Salazar once in the head.

Salazar, 23, was taken from the fourplex at 1835 N. Broadway to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, where he died at 3:42 a.m., police records show. A 23-year-old suspect was identified after numerous interviews, Allred said, and he was arrested shortly after 9 a.m. in the 1400 block of North Otis. That is just a couple of blocks west of Broadway.

Allred said the argument was over “a small amount” of money.

“What that money involved — drugs, cars — we’re not really sure,” Allred said. The victim was a documented gang member, but the suspect was not, he said.

There were six or seven other people in the apartment at the time of the shooting, he said. Only one shot was fired and police do not think there are other suspects in the case.

This is the 14th homicide of the year in Wichita.
