Kansas City, Kan., police are investigating why a child was wandering naked and alone in a wooded area early Saturday.

Police said they received a call about 1 a.m. Saturday on a child needing care in the 5500 block of Metropolitan Avenue. Officers were told that a passerby noticed the child walking in the area without clothing. The passerby took the child to a nearby fire station.

Officers took the 2-year-old boy to the Wyandotte County Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center, and he remained in protective custody Saturday night.

Police said the boy’s family called to report him missing at 10:40 a.m. Saturday. The boy was in good condition, police said, and they are looking into whether any negligence was involved in his disappearance.
