Kansas No. 5, Wichita State No. 16 in AP preseason poll

Wichita State starts the season at No. 16 in the Associated Press top 25, its first appearance in the preseason ranking since 1981-82.

The Shockers, coming off a Final Four appearance, received 512 points from a panel of 65 writers and broadcasters. Kansas is No. 5 with 1,357 votes. Kentucky is No. 1, followed by Michigan State, defending NCAA champion Louisville and Duke.

WSU is also No. 16 in the USA Today coaches poll. It plays Oklahoma Baptist in an exhibition game on Saturday at Koch Arena before opening the regular season on Nov. 9 against Emporia State.

The Shockers started the 1981-82 season No. 6 in the AP poll, eventually moving up to No. 2. They also earned preseason rankings in 1963-64 (No. 5) and 1964-65 (No. 3).

The Jayhawks, who ranked No. 6 in the USA Today poll, lost all five starters and its five leading scorers from last season’s team, but has one of the top freshman recruiting classes in the nation.
