KU point guard Naadir Tharpe suspended for one game

Kansas point guard Naadir Tharpe will miss KU’s season opener against Louisiana Monroe on Nov. 8 after breaking an NCAA rule by playing in a pro-am game in Chicago last summer, KU coach Bill Self said Tuesday.

Tharpe’s participation in the game violated NCAA rules on summer games, which must take place in an athlete’s hometown or college area. Tharpe was in Chicago visiting KU sophomore Jamari Traylor, who grew up there. KU learned of the violation soon after and self-reported to the NCAA.

“That’s the penalty for playing in a game he knew he shouldn’t have been playing in, but didn’t use good judgment,” Self said. “So it’s a one-for-one deal, and that’s the situation.”

Self said freshman guard Frank Mason would start KU’s next exhibition game against Fort Hays State on Tuesday and against Louisiana Monroe in the season opener. Tharpe will be able to return against Duke in the Champions Classic on Nov. 12 in Chicago.

KU to appear on Canada’s TSN

Andrew Wiggins mania is spreading in his home country. Canadian sports channel TSN, the northern equivalent of ESPN, announced Tuesday that it will be airing every one of Kansas’ basketball games this season on the channel’s various networks and platforms.

“There are many Canadian basketball fans who can’t wait to watch Andrew and follow the Jayhawks this season,” Self said. “When we have played in Canada in the preseason, a lot of KU fans have come to see us play. Now they can watch all our games on TSN, which will be great exposure for Kansas basketball.”

• Wiggins also added to his magazine cover total this week, appearing on this month’s edition of ESPN The Magazine.
