A preliminary hearing for a man charged with strangling his live-in girlfriend in their Derby home and stabbing her 15-year-old son has been postponed so psychologists can determine whether he is competent to stand trial.

Charles A. Beck Jr., 40, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Lonnie Staggs, 44, and attempted murder in the attack on her son. The hearing was scheduled for Oct. 31.

Derby police said the crimes occurred on the morning of Sept. 1. They said Beck was arrested that night after he turned himself in near Springfield, Mo. He is being held on $1 million bond.
