A man attempting to break into a liquor store after business hours didn’t count on an employee still being in the store late Thursday night, police said.

The employee heard noise at the back door of Dave’s Liquor at 3180 S. Meridian shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday, Lt. Doug Nolte said. That’s just north of 31st Street South in southwest Wichita.

The employee called 911, and officers found a man trying to force open the door. He had a bandanna over his face and socks covering his hands, Nolte said.

He also had multiple knives and a baseball bat in his possession, a police report said. The 21-year-old man was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.
