A 35-year-old man faces up to 20 years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to robbing an Overland Park bank with a hatchet earlier this year.
U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom announced the plea Tuesday in the case involving Derek T. Brownlee, of Kansas City, Mo. Brownlee stood accused of jumping the counter and demanding money at a Metcalf Bank branch on July 1, then stealing cash from a drawer, as well as personal electronics from a teller. He was masked and carrying the hatchet at the time, Grissom said.
Brownlee subsequently led law enforcement on a high-speed car chase and foot chase before he was arrested.
Brownlee is set for sentencing on Jan. 21. In addition to the prison term, a judge could impose a maximum fine of $250,000 in the case, Grissom said.
