Many motorists in the Wichita area and Sedgwick County encountered slick roads and bridges Saturday morning as temperatures dipped below freezing.
There were multiple car accidents on the K-96 overpass near Mount Hope in Sedgwick County, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
A total of three vehicles went into the ditch. One car slid off and then two other cars struck the bridge and slid off the embankment, overturning.
Two drivers had minor injuries. One was taken to Via Christi St. Francis and the other went to the Hutchinson hospital for treatment, said the Sheriff’s Office.
Emergency dispatchers were kept busy early Saturday morning as police and fire personnel responded to accidents throughout the metro area.
Westbound lanes of Kellogg downtown were blocked at 6 a.m. because of a three-car pileup. Later, a multiple-vehicle accident near K-96 and Hillside diverted westbound traffic for several hours.
“If you have to scrape ice off of your windshield, you should look out for ice on bridges,” said Sgt. Conrad Jansson, with Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
