Pitcher Garrett Hutson has opened his recruiting and is no longer unofficially committed to Wichita State.

Hutson, a junior at Augusta, gave WSU a non-binding oral commitment in August. Recently, he decided to consider other schools. He visited Oklahoma and said the Sooners offered him a scholarship. He is also interested in Miami (Fla.), Southern California and Central Florida.

“I'm still a junior and I wanted to look at other schools,” he said. “(His family) thought it was too early to stop looking around.”

After his trip to OU, Hutson said he told WSU coach Todd Butler he wanted to look at other schools, leading Butler to withdraw his scholarship offer.

“He understood if I wanted to look around,” Hutson said. “But he said if I was going to do that, go ahead and de-committ.”

Hutson is considered one of the top prospects in the Midwest and is likely to be drafted by a professional team. He transferred to Augusta from Circle in late September.

In August, Hutson said WSU’s high level of interest early in his recruiting convinced him to commit.

“They were the school that contacted me the most,” Hutson said in August. “My other serious consideration was Oklahoma State. WSU seemed more interested.”

WSU coaches are not allowed to comment on recruits until they sign a letter of intent. Athletes from the class of 2015 are not allowed to sign until November 2014.
