Snap count observations: Cooper sees less time on special teams

Here are some observations based on the snap-count data from the Chiefs’ 24-7 win over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Stats provided by the NFL.

*I feel like I write about this guy everyday, but rookie cornerback Marcus Cooper, who got the start on Sunday, logged 100 percent of the defensive snaps for the first time in his career on Sunday. This seemed to effect his workload on special teams, which dropped from 17 snaps (52 percent) the previous week against Tennessee to only seven (24 percent) against the Raiders.

Just last week, special teams coach Dave Toub said he was doing all he could to keep Cooper on special teams.

“I’m trying to steal reps when I can,” Toub said. “He’s very talented. Defense is slowly taking him away and that’s the way it is. Good players end up moving up, and that’s life in our world.

“I will try to keep using him on punt returns and in the return game where he’s coming off the field (when he doesn’t) necessarily have to go back out to play defense on the coverage units. That’s the plan with him.”

Former Kansas safety Bradley McDougald seemed to snap up all of Cooper’s old reps on Sunday, as he logged 10 special teams snaps on Sunday after not playing at all against the Titans.

*Cornerback Dunta Robinson returned to the field Sunday, logging 41 snaps just one week after he dressed but didnt play at all against Tennessee.

*Give Kendrick Lewis credit. The guy has a sprained ankle and he still managed to play every defensive snap. Last week, he played only 84 percent of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps.

*Receiver Chad Hall saw his playing time decrease sharply, as he logged only one offensive snap one week after he logged a season-high 16.

*The same can be said for receiver A.J. Jenkins, who went from 29 snaps to four, though some of that had to do with the fact starter Donnie Avery was healthy, unlike the week before.

*Guard Rishaw Johnson didn’t play after logging a snap the previous week.

*Rookie linebacker Nico Johnson earned a career-high 23 snaps on special teams. He essentially filled in for linebacker Dezman Moses, who was inactive with a toe injury.
