BEST BETS AT THE TALLGRASS FILM FESTIVAL
The Tallgrass Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday with a gala screening and kick-off party at Botanica. Festivities and films continue through Sunday night.
Here are 10 films that look promising to me (*indicates a filmmaker is scheduled to be present for a Q&A after the film). Grab an official Tallgrass Film Festival guide at the box office tent near the Orpheum for showtimes.
*A Band Called Death Documentary about a 1970s punk trio called Death and their newfound popularity decades after they disbanded.
*Blue Caprice An abandoned boy is lured to America and drawn into the shadow of a dangerous father figure. Inspired by the real-life events that led to the 2002 Beltway sniper attacks.
*Favor This film is dark and reminiscent of the Coen Brothers Blood Simple, about a man who asks his best friend to get rid of a dead body. But the friend starts to become unhinged after he performs the deed. (This years Stubbornly Independent Award winner.)
*Forev Romantic comedy about a two friends who go on a road trip and balk at the idea that they would ever get married. And before they know it, theyre engaged. And stuck in the middle of desert, until a wandering drifter arrives.
I am Divine This looks to be uproarious, a documentary about how Divine, aka Harris Glenn Milstead, became John Waters cinematic muse and an international drag icon.
*I Declare War This looks to be Stand by Me meets Lord of the Flies, as summer games between neighborhood kids turn deadly serious when jealousy and betrayal enter the mix.
*Lost on Purpose Drama starring C. Thomas Howell (remember him?) following a group of ranch hands in the San Joaquin Valley, a dairy farmer owner, and the ensuing trouble that sets in when too much booze is around.
*Shotgun Wedding After Robert, a soon-to-be-married groom, accidentally shoots his fiancees maid of honor in the face during a drunken skeet-shooting session, his meddling mother does whatever it takes to make sure the wedding takes place.
*Worm Shot entirely using a GoPro Hero 2 camera, this is told from an uncut perspective in one 90-minute take. It tells the story of a man wanted for a double homicide in the small town of Guthrie, Okla.
Una Noche In Havana, a young man dreams of escaping to Miami. When he is accused of assault, he appeals to a friend to help him reach America 90 miles across the ocean.
