Teen survives jumping from SUV on K-96; father arrested

A 17-year-old girl unhappy with her father jumped from the SUV she was riding in on K-96 on Monday morning in east Wichita, but escaped serious injury, police said.

The teen jumped shortly after 7:30 a.m. just west of Greenwich Road as the SUV was traveling west on K-96, according to a police document. She “tumbled for a considerable distance,” the report stated.

Her 43-year-old father stopped and picked her up, then continued on his way. A witness wrote down the SUV’s tag number and police eventually traced the vehicle to a residence in the 14600 block of East Sport of Kings. That’s northeast of 13th and 143rd Street East in far east Wichita.

Arrest records show the girl’s father was booked into jail at 9 p.m. Monday for obstructing the legal process.

“He was arrested for refusing to cooperate in the investigation,” Lt. Joe Schroeder said.

He also said the teen was fortunate to be alive. Jumping from moving vehicles is unwise, he said, because of the high risk of being killed or critically injured.
