Two Lyons residents died Tuesday after their car collided with a semitrailer truck at the junction of K-156 and K-4, about 1 1/2 miles northeast of Claflin in Barton County.

Gordon L. Zahradnik, 80, was attempting a U-turn on eastbound K-156 after merging onto the highway when the semi, also headed east, struck the 2008 Buick Lucerne, according to a crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol. The impact pushed the Buick down an embankment and into a ditch.

Zahradnik and his passenger, 78-year-old Rae Vivian Zahradnik, both died in the crash, the highway patrol said. The driver of the semi, a 50-year-old Iowa woman, was not hurt.

The crash happened about 2:20 p.m.
