Two people in fair condition after chase, motorcycle accident

Two people were in fair condition Wednesday morning at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis after they were injured in a motorcycle accident near 13th and McLean that followed a brief police chase.

A 26-year-old man, who was the driver, and a 34-year-old woman, who was the passenger, were taken to the hospital about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday in critical and serious condition, respectively. But their conditions were upgraded to fair, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A Wichita police officer attempted to stop the motorcyclist on a traffic violation, but the driver sped away and hit a curb, Police Lt. Doug Nolte said.

Police later determined “there might have been some drug usage by the driver of the motorcycle that contributed to his trying to flee,” Nolte said.

Because the accident involved a chase, the Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating.

A highway patrol accident report said the motorcycle attempted to pass a car when it struck the right curb at the intersection of 13th and Clarence.
