Garden exchange Saturday

A garden exchange where people can bring plants and garden items to share and pick up others to take home will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Fairview Christian Church, 16th and Fairview (west of Waco). Tom Ewert is taking over the exchange for his friend Kelly Hayes, who passed away this summer. Hayes was a recycler who had had the exchange for several years.

Any garden items are allowed except chemicals. And you don’t have to bring anything to the exchange in order to “shop” – take what you want from the exchange. It’s all free.

Designer Q&A

Q: Would you be able to give me some good suggestions on making a dark living room feel brighter? My living room is painted a blue/gray, and all the furniture is dark wood. There are large sliding glass doors on one side of the wall, but the only light is on the ceiling.

A: Meg Caswell, Season 6 winner of HGTV’s “Design Star,” answers: Lighting is very important in every room. You need to add some table lamps, and if you don’t have room for those, then floor lamps are important. Make sure you light the dark corners that the ceiling light doesn’t hit. And maybe paint some of that dark wood.
