An eastern Jackson County man was killed in the crash of an ultralight aircraft Tuesday at a private airfield near Lone Jack.

The Jackson County sheriff’s office was called just before 6 p.m. to the scene in the 13300 block of Ragsdale Road, north of U.S. 50.

Sheriff Mike Sharp said the pilot was attempting to land on the grass runway of a small airfield known as Lamb’s Field.

“Witnesses reported that as he was coming in to land, he veered to the right and crashed in a field,” Sharp said.

Somone who lived nearby said smoke could be seen rising from the scene shortly after the crash.

Sharp said the identity of the man would not be released until family members were notified.
