The driver killed in a fiery crash Tuesday on K-196 near Newton has been identified as 21-year-old Alex S. Valentine of Valley Center, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in the agency’s online crash log.

According to reports, Valentine was driving a 1999 Toyota Rav4 west on K-196 when the vehicle left the road and slammed into a concrete pillar at the I-135 overpass. The vehicle caught fire after the impact, leaving law enforcement unable to immediately identify the driver.

The crash happened about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, about eight miles south of Newton, according to the highway patrol.
