The 17-month-old boy who was found in his grandparents’ backyard koi pond Monday morning has died, officials said.

Ethan Joshua Kimmi died Thursday morning at Wesley Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Susan Burchill said.

Ethan’s family released the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that our beloved Ethan Joshua Kimmi has gone to heaven. In his short life he touched so many people. He never met a single stranger. He is in heaven giving high fives to everyone. Our family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support. This is a very tough time in our lives. He will be greatly missed.”

People willing to help with expenses can go to any Credit Union of America and donate to the Ethan Kimmi Memorial Fund.

Police say Ethan was dropped off at his grandparents’ house in the 5100 block of South Madison on Monday morning. He was playing in a screened-in area and apparently got out through a dog door. He was found shortly after 7:30 a.m. lying face up in the pond by a relative.

Investigators have ruled the incident an accident.
