Authorities in Harvey County say they think they know the name of a driver killed Tuesday in a fiery crash on K-196 near Newton, but dental records will be used to make a positive identification.
The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle veered off of K-196 for an unknown reason while heading west and struck a pillar under the I-135 overpass, where it ignited. Heavy fire damage prevented authorities from immediately identifying the driver or who owned the vehicle.
According to the agency’s Facebook page, an examination of the driver’s dental records has been requested. A photo posted on the page shows the vehicle engulfed in flames; thick, black smoke billows from the barely-recognizable remains.
The crash happened about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, a Kansas Highway Patrol dispatcher said Tuesday. The driver’s name has not yet been released.
