A 17-month-old boy continues to fight for his life at a local hospital, a day after he was found floating in a koi pond in the backyard of his grandparents’ house in south Wichita.

A police report states a relative dropped the toddler off at a house Monday morning in the 5100 block of South Madison, Hydraulic and I-135. Police have said the house belongs to the toddler’s grandparents.

The young boy was in a screened-in area and crawled through a dog door to get outside, the police report stated. He was found face-up in the koi pond in the backyard at about 7:30 a.m.

He was taken to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition. Police have said the boy may have slipped on rain-slickened rocks at the edge of the pond and fallen into the water.
