Police placed a young child in protective custody Monday after discovering unlivable conditions at a house in south Wichita while they were investigating an infant’s death.

A 24-year-old man called 911 after waking from a nap at about 1 p.m. and discovering a 5-month-old child not breathing, Lt. Joe Schroeder said. Officers responding to the house in the 4800 block of South Minnesota, near 47th Street South and Hydraulic, found conditions to be so unsanitary they took a 3-year-old boy to the Wichita Children’s Home.

The action was not connected to the infant’s death, Schroeder said. An autopsy is planned to see if the death was due to natural causes.
