A Clearwater man impaled last week in a traffic crash at Zoo Boulevard and I-235 has died, a hospital house supervisor said Thursday evening.

Robert Nickelson, 31, died Wednesday, a week after he was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis with part of a metal fence pole in his upper chest. Nickelson sustained the critical injuries on Sept. 4 after his SUV left the road as he was driving northwest on Zoo at the I-235 interchange, hit several metal poles and fell 15 feet to a sidewalk.

The crash happened shortly after midnight, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has said. Two people who witnessed the wreck contacted 911.
