A man tried to rob a south Wichita Wal-Mart on Tuesday night but left empty-handed, police said.

He walked into the Wal-Mart at 501 E. Pawnee at about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday and told two employees moving a money cart, “You know what to do next,” according to a police document.

He indicated he had a gun, Lt. Doug Nolte said, and at least one employee thought he had the gun hidden in his hoodie. The employees didn’t comply, however, and the suspect left the store.

One witness went outside to see where the suspect went and saw him walking toward a nearby apartment complex. Officers following up on the case found a Halloween mask that was used by the suspect.
