A woman is in critical condition at a local hospital after being attacked at her apartment in downtown Wichita, police said.

A woman heard screaming coming from another apartment in the 600 block of North Broadway shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday, Lt. Doug Nolte said. She went downstairs and knocked on the door where the noise was coming from.

A man “naked from the waist down” answered the door, Nolte said. The neighbor looked inside and saw “a female with obvious injuries to her face” lying on the floor, he said.

The neighbor left to call 911. When she returned, Nolte said, the man who answered the door was gone. She stayed to tend to the 59-year-old beating victim, who had injuries to her head and upper body.

As she was helping the victim, Nolte said, “The suspect came back and tried to kick in the door.”

He couldn’t get in, though, and rode off on a bicycle. The victim was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, Nolte said, where she was placed on a ventilator and is in the intensive care unit.

Detectives so far have been unable to talk to the victim, Nolte said.

“It appears there could have been some sort of sexual assault” in addition to the beating, Nolte said.
