A Wichita police officer spotted a wandering toddler early Tuesday morning in a convenience store parking lot on south Broadway.

The officer saw the child at about 2 a.m. Tuesday at Broadway and East Mount Vernon, Lt. Doug Nolte said.

The 3-year-old boy wasn’t with an adult at the QuikTrip at 2010 S. Broadway, so officers began checking surrounding businesses. They learned he was staying at a hotel next door with his father, Nolte said, but the parent wasn’t in the room.

The father was eventually discovered nearby.

“He was passed out behind the bar in a parking lot,” Nolte said.

The bar was abandoned. The 21-year-old man was arrested and his son placed in protective custody, Nolte said.
