A large American flag was placed on a wall of South High School’s gym during an assembly Friday in honor of Jim Quick, a former South teacher who is battling cancer.

Funds for the 15-foot by 25-foot flag were raised during an annual 10-kilometer run held in July, said Betsey Goering, a teacher and coach at South. A plaque hangs on the wall next to the flag.

Quick, who attended the ceremony, taught for 20 years at South before the cancer forced him to retire in 2012. He was a big supporter of the school’s athletes and teams.
